Dog by fire photoWe will often use and recommend thermotherapy using heat as a treatment in the clinic and at home. Heat can have several physiological effects and the most important are…

1. Increased circulation (vasodilation)
2. Pain relief
3. Increased soft tissue extensibility
4. Relaxation of muscle spasm

You would not want to use heat where there is oedema (swelling) or in cases where there is altered sensation to an area. Always check with your Vet or Veterinary Physiotherapist whether heat is suitable for your pet and ask them to show you how to use it correctly.
